The Mustang men's varsity basketball team won the CapRock tournament over the holiday break, marking the first time the Mustangs have ever claimed this title. This was the third year the Mustangs participated in the tournament, which is the largest high school basketball tournament in the country.
Traveling early the morning after Christmas, the Mustangs experienced a slow start in the first game, trailing at halftime. However, the team rebounded and beat Morton by 23 points in the third quarter, taking control of the game moving forward. The Mustangs matched up against Itasca the following day, taking another victory to put them in the semi-finals. The next opponent, Ropes High School, came into the game with only one loss and played extremely physically, but the Mustangs still landed on top with a 54-41 victory.
This victory matched them against Slaton High School, ranked #20 in the state for 3A UIL. Located just 20 minutes from Frenship, the championship game was like a home game for them. The Mustangs started strong with a 9-0 run, forcing Slaton to switch to a zone defense for the remainder of the game. This approach slowed the Mustangs down and allowed them to stay close throughout the game.
Throughout the game, the Mustangs faced continual foul trouble. Senior John Clark fouled out in the third quarter, followed by junior Daniel Seeley in the fourth. However, the team displayed remarkable poise down the stretch. With the game tied, junior Manny Weaver hit a clutch mid-range jumper, putting the Mustangs ahead by two points with less than 20 seconds left. After Slaton missed a second free throw on their next possession, the Mustangs were able to inbound the ball and run out the clock, winning the game 53-52 and the CapRock championship.
Weaver, Clark and seniors Drew Hamilton and Sean Agyapong received All-Tournament honors.Â
