Dan Whitsett

Coach Whitsett enters his fifth season in Texas as the leader of the Mustangs Football Program
and his 25th overall as a Head Football Coach. A veteran educator and administrator, he has also
served 10 seasons as a Head Baseball Coach and 14 seasons as a Head Softball Coach. For the
past 23 years, he has held leadership roles as an Athletic Director and/or Dean of Students,
demonstrating a long-standing commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the
field.
In 2025, Coach Whitsett guided the Mustangs to an impressive 7–3 regular season record,
continuing a career defined by competitive excellence and consistent postseason success.
Prior to his time in Texas, Coach Whitsett led the Tri-Cities Prep Jaguars in Pasco, Washington,
for 19 seasons (2002–2021). During that span, he compiled an outstanding 146–68 record,
captured a State Championship, advanced to three State Semifinals, and reached the State
Quarterfinals 14 times. His teams qualified for postseason play in 17 of 19 seasons, a testament
to sustained excellence and program stability.
His achievements earned widespread recognition. Coach Whitsett was named Washington State
Coach of the Year three times, Regional Coach of the Year five times, and District Coach of the
Year nine times. In 2018, he was honored as both District and State Athletic Director of the
Year. He also contributed to statewide athletics governance as a member of the Washington
Interscholastic Activities Association Representative Assembly and served as District 5
President.
In 2005, Coach Whitsett expanded his résumé by becoming the inaugural Head Coach of the Tri-
Cities Fever Arena Football Team. Balancing professional football in the spring with high school
football in the summer and fall, he led the Fever to a 14–5 record and an Indoor Bowl National
Championship in his first season. Over two professional seasons, he compiled a 26–9 record,
secured a Western Division title, earned two playoff appearances, and captured an Indoor Bowl
Championship. He was named National Indoor Football League Coach of the Year in 2005. In
2009, he became the first Head Football Coach in Washington State history to win
championships at both the professional and high school levels.
Throughout his career, Coach Whitsett has developed numerous athletes who advanced to the
collegiate level and beyond, including players who have competed in the NFL and CFL, as well
as many who have gone on to become high school and college coaches. Most recently,
Quarterback Cody Dow (’26) signed to play at Blinn College, while seven seniors from the 2023
Mustangs class earned opportunities to play at the next level. Four are currently competing in
college football: Drew Denton (Oklahoma Baptist), Cash Etheredge (Southern Nazarene), Noah
Wheeler (Grove City College), and Max Luna (Texas Wesleyan).
Coach Whitsett’s wife, Allison, is a PRCA Rodeo Secretary who travels across the United States
coordinating major rodeo events, including Fort Worth, Del Rio, The American, Waxahachie,
and Fort Bend.
Coach and Allison reside in Leonard, Texas, and have three adult children. They are active
members of King’s Trail Cowboy Church in Whitewright, where they serve on the Arena Team.
